  6. supports the hypothesis that 
  7. rearing animals in deprived 
  8. visual environments will lead 
  9. to impairment of vision. In 
  10. fact, it would seem that the 
  11. requirement for normal 
  12. maturation of the visual 
  13. nervous system (which may 
  14. include special kinds of growth 
  15. of neurons in the brain) rules 
  16. out all experiments in which 
  17. animals are deprived of normal 
  18. vision as a source of definitive 
  19. evidence about the innateness 
  20. of form perception. The same 
  21. reasoning applies to the study 
  22. of individuals born blind who 
  23. gain their sight; it is likely 
  24. that these people have suffered 
  25. some degree of impairment of 
  26. their visual system.
